Over the years we have explored a number of topics beginning with F.
On the surface they may seem unrelated. Visibility. Fear. Filing. Free resources. Fair Trade. First Aid.
But when you look a little deeper, they all have something in common.
They are about foundations!
Strong, steady, practical foundations that allow your charity to function well, build trust and serve its community with confidence.
This blog pulls together our previous F themes and invites you to reflect on how firm your own foundations are.
F Over the Years...
Bringing the F’s Together
When you place these themes side by side, a picture forms.
- Being found strengthens outreach.
- Facing fear strengthens leadership.
- Filing structures strengthen memory.
- Wise use of free tools strengthens sustainability.
- Fair Trade and First Aid strengthen credibility.
None of these are flashy initiatives. They are the quiet, steady work of governance.
They are what allow a charity to transition smoothly between office holders. To welcome newcomers confidently.
To respond calmly in a crisis.
To protect its reputation.
They are the foundations.
A Quick Foundation Check for Your Committee
Take ten minutes at your next trustee meeting and ask:
- Are we easy to find?
- Are we avoiding anything because it feels uncomfortable?
- Could a new volunteer navigate our filing system?
- Are we relying too heavily on “free” tools without reviewing risk?
- Are our values and safety practices visible and current?
You do not need to fix everything at once.
But naming gaps is the first step to strengthening them.
Strong charities are not built on heroic individuals.
They are built on simple, shared systems that support ordinary people to do good work well.
