The Meaning of Home and Belonging
When we think of home, we often envisage a physical place. However, a home is much more than just four walls and a roof; it is where our loved ones are and where memories are created.
It’s the feeling of belonging and love that we generate being around our loved ones.
My children remind me of this whenever we are away. It is easy to refer to our temporary lodgings as “home.” To my children, this doesn’t make sense because, in their logic, home is the physical house they permanently live in.
This leads to questions and the explanation that we don’t mean our actual house but rather the home we have created together during that time. As long as we are together, that is our home.
Reflections During Advent
Advent is a perfect time to reflect on this understanding. We should focus less on the physical and material aspects of home and more on the feeling, the company we keep, and the joy of being together with others.
No matter how you spend the festive season and your beliefs, it is a time when everyone can enjoy the time and magic. Surround yourself with your loved ones, laugh, and enjoy the time this season allows.
Hygge: A Cozy Concept of Home
I like the concept of Hygge (a Danish word that describes the feeling of contentment and coziness) to create a warm atmosphere, take a break from daily life, and enjoy simple things with family or close friends. That to me is home, a place that is cozy, warm, and filled with enjoyment.
