The Advent Invitation to Come and Find Rest
This is one of my favourite Bible verses. I like it in all translations, and have meditated on it and studied it many times.
I tend to combine it and read 28 – 30 as a complete piece. When I learned that the yoke mentioned would link the two animals so that the stronger and more experienced could train and support the other it added another level of meaning for me.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)
One of the ways I’ve practiced coming to God daily over the last couple of years is guided scripture and meditation using an app – Lectio 365, which during Advent has been sharing an Advent hymn every night. This hymn seemed appropriate for today.
29 Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me.
Matthew 11:29 (TPT)
