AdventWord 2024: Prepare

The Pressure of Preparation

This time of year, brings a lot of pressure to be prepared, and so much going on it can quickly become overwhelming.

For any walk of life, it is easy to get swept up in the material things, to ensure we tick off the numerous tasks we feel we should complete – such as traditions, decorating, attending events, preparing food, and gifting (if you choose to). Creating a never-ending list of tasks that can feel unmanageable.

However, there is no right or wrong way to prepare. What preparing means varies from person to person and depends on individual circumstances. Don’t be influenced by articles, advertisements, and media that dictate what you should do during the festive season.

Preparing for any stage or season in life is a journey; there isn’t a right way to spend your time or resources.

A Lesson from Mary and Joseph

This time of year, when we think about the birth of Jesus reminds us that time still moves no matter how prepared you are. Mary and Joseph were not prepared for the birth of Jesus, they had no room, or the resources they needed. They had faith that what was needed would come and it did, they found somewhere to rest and make a bed then Jesus arrived regardless of the preparations they made.

The Inner Work of Preparation

Preparing is as much of an internal state, as being still, being aware and having faith that all will be as it should. Remember to take time and space to mentally prepare for what is next.

This year I have tried to be more mindful of the time I am spending with my children whilst they still relish in the magic this season brings.

I could easily use that time to prepare the house or work through my to-do list but the realisation that time still moves on and so my preparations have been to schedule and plan for time with my family.

Don’t get lost in the preparations, find the joy in it.
