Quaker A-Z: Z is for Zeal, Zest & Zen

Z words can be tricky

After all, there are only between 426 (Scrabble dictionary) and 693 (Word Finder site) words beginning with Z in English. This is why I am going for Zeal, Zest and Zen.

Plus, for each A-Z series, by the time I get to Z, it is not only the end of the alphabet but the end of the year!

By December I’ve been exploring this topic quite a bit and have to be careful not to repeat myself too much – but also I don’t want to interrupt your time off with anything too heavy.

These posts are meant to be instructive and inspirational rather than guilt-inducing.

Consider how you feel, which of these resonates with you?

Zeal

Zeal is dedication or enthusiasm for something. If you have zeal, you’re willing, energized, and motivated. If you have passion for something, you have zeal, which is kind of a mix of eagerness and energy and devotion.

Zest

If you’ve got a zest for something, you put your whole heart and soul into it. Dancers who have great zest leap, kick, and soar their way around the stage with a kind of joyful energy.

Zen

Being Zen is when you are relaxed and not worrying about things that you cannot change.

Are there ways you can encourage yourself and others to follow the advice quoted below?

Every stage of our lives offers fresh opportunities. Responding to divine guidance, try to discern the right time to undertake or relinquish responsibilities without undue pride or guilt. Attend to what love requires of you, which may not be great busyness.

During the change over the calendar years, there is usually a lull in meetings and social occasions. I personally take time between Christmas and New Year to hunker down and close out the world to give me time and space to think, review, dream and plan. Although I love being with people, I need that quiet time to recharge – it is one of the many reasons I love Meeting for Worship.

MBS closed at the end of business Friday 20th December and won’t reopen until the morning of Monday 6th January.

We hope you also get some time to rest and recharge, to prepare to hand over or lay down some responsibilities or get ready to take up others.

However you are celebrating or spending this time we hope that you receive what you need at this time.

We look forward to seeing you in 2025!

Join us in January for our next #MBSC FREE workshop, where we explore building community with clear communications.
